Once in a while people ask where are all the Hawk Host reviews or where can they post reviews so I’m just going to go through a few places I know of. The obvious one is WebHostingTalk which is actually a forum but there are reviews there and anyone is welcome to post their own of us or any other host. Now onto some of the web sites that are tracking reviews of us: Read More
This has got to be my favorite type of ticket we get because it never makes any sense. I don’t know if it’s all the “non overselling” hosts spewing servers are overloaded if you sell more than 250MB space on a $10/month hosting account or what. But we have had an increasing number of tickets titled this where it has nothing to do with a machine being overloaded at all. Apparently no matter what the problem is the server is overloaded is the cause. Here are some examples of recent tickets, chats and calls I’ve seen with regards to the servers being supposedly overloaded. Read More
We just finished deploying our latest VPS node located in Washington DC which goes by the name Jedi. It’s our highest end machine ever being deployed coming in with the following specifications: Read More
The one thing with web hosting no matter who your market is there are a few users who cause problems for the majority of the user base. That’s whether you’re selling 10000GB of space or 1GB of space there will be users who do things that are not advised. We at Hawk Host deal with these and it’s growing on a daily basis how many warning emails we’re sending out or users with active tickets we’re working on resolving the problems they’re causing. These always revolve around poorly made PHP scripts, poor MySQL queries or large amounts of traffic that is not traffic worth having. I figured I’d share a few of the most recent ones I’ve personally had to deal with in hopes that other users will not go making the same mistakes. Read More
Seattle Washington has been an option for us to have a presence in for some time but we held off on it focusing on Dallas TX then to Washington DC. At the end of this month unless something unanticipated happens we’re going to finally offer the option of Seattle for our shared and reseller hosting servers. Seattle’s primary focus will be on serving markets that come to us via the west coast which means Asia. We’re not sure when we’ll have a VPS offering there as virtual private servers are not near as popular due to their price so we’d rather give the shared and reseller market a try in Seattle first. Seattle will of course have access to the features of all our other locations which means access to R1Soft backups and making use of our redundant DNS cluster. Read More
PHP released the first release candidate for PHP 5.3 which means it’s only a matter of time and that will be the latest release of PHP. It’s going to be interesting for us as PHP 5.3 adds features and could potentially break things. There are several extensions that have been moved to PECL which will mean potentially cPanel’s PHP compile system will be broken for a period of time. Some of them are replaced by others which are I assume more supported than their predecessors but it still could break things for users who are using the functions. Then there are changes of handling of deprecated functions which could mean errors for some users. I could see us being a month or two behind on this PHP release as there are just a lot of variables besides PHP itself. Like I said cPanel is one end but also LiteSpeed and it’s support for 5.3 with it’s specialized SAPI (how it communicates with PHP). We also have things like Ioncube and Zend optimizer which should work but you never know. So we’ll end up allowing others to be the guinea pigs on this one and we’ll wait until things seems to be all ironed out. Here’s a run down of the changes: Read More
It’s been a little over a month since we’ve actively been on Twitter (twitting, tweeting, and possibly twatting) and over that time period I’ve learned several things about how Twitter works and how people utilize it. Here are my observations: Read More
We’ve added Git to all of our servers for people to use. Git is a VCS (version control system) that’s similar to Subversion but addresses several shortcomings of todays popular VCS’ (CVS, Subversion, etc). If you’re interested in utilizing Git you will need to request SSH access simply by submitting a ticket on our support center. Read More
**WARNING** The formatting on this post is lackluster - once again who am I to fight against the ways of WordPress? Hopefully the point / useful information gets across. I haven’t checked the spelling in this post either - so don’t kill me if you find a typo. Read More
On our new site we have a phone number displayed on each page as well as on our contact pages we have the extension of each department listed. Even with this we have not seen much of an increase in the frequency of calls which is a good thing. It may just be our target market who do not feel comfortable calling or just people who buy web hosting find making a support ticket far easier. Read More
