Hawk Host Report - September 2011

Posted on Mon Sep 19, 2011 by Brian Farrell

August was one of our busier months in recent memory. You’d have a hard time telling though, as just about all of our major improvements were done internally. Most of our updates and status reports are about features which immediately benefit our users. For better or worse, there isn’t much of that this month. Don’t panic though. We spent almost every single day in August laying the foundation for an even better, stronger Hawk Host for years to come. Read More

Shared hosting: Free Bandwidth Upgrades!

Posted on Thu Sep 15, 2011 by Brian Farrell

As of today, we’re going to be giving everyone on our shared plans (current and future) a bit of a free upgrade. We did this a few months ago with our reseller plans and it has worked out wonderfully so far. So we figure why not shared plans too? Read More

Five Years with Softlayer

Posted on Sun Sep 4, 2011 by Tony Baird

We’ve now been with SoftLayer over five years and I figured it was time to talk about that as we received some goodies from them recently.  When we started using SoftLayer they had just their Dallas location and a single server room.  The huge draw for us at the time was the fact they were one of the few providers to actually offer things like the ability to reboot servers without a ticket.  It meant we were less dependent on technicians on site to be restarting servers and investigating issues where we could not view the console until a kvm was hooked up.  They were also actively developing and still are further features to their portal to give more power to us. Hawk Host Report - August 2011

Posted on Tue Aug 16, 2011 by Brian Farrell

July, July! What a great month it was, even though it seemed to be gone in an instant. We’ve added some new services, there’s global network upgrades pending, and we’ve even optimized some existing services. It’s hard to say just exactly where those 31 days went, but everyone managed to accomplish a lot. I’m sure I’ve overlooked something but here’s the major changes for last month. Read More

VPS Panel Update

Posted on Mon Jul 18, 2011 by Tony Baird

It has been quite a while since I’ve talked about the VPS panel but don’t worry we have not forgot about it.  We have a lot of projects going on so some take a higher priority than others.  Those projects have hit the point of maturity and now are just receiving bug fixes and minor feature requests rather than major code overhauls.  That means we’ve now dedicated our resources on getting our VPS panel out and we’re finally getting to the point where it’ll be how our virtual private servers will be managed. cPanel 11.30 Reaches Stable

Posted on Fri Jul 15, 2011 by Tony Baird

It’s that time again for a major update to cPanel which in this case is 11.30.  It just reached their stable version which is the most conservative build they offer.  Their stable build is also what we run when a new major release is pushed to our typical branch of release.  We’ve been doing this due to bugs we had encountered in the past when major releases from cPanel reach their release builds.  We’d rather let the more brave web hosts out there find all the bugs for each major release.  Though now that it’s reached all their branches we’re now running 11.30 on all our servers under our typical branch of release. Hawk Host Report - July 2011

Posted on Fri Jul 8, 2011 by brian

June was an interesting month for us. The month started off with a meeting at our operations office here in Buffalo, NY with a number of our staff discussing the company, where we’re at and where we’re headed. The remaining 3 weeks were spent doing business as usual. We had a strong month, we ran into some issues, and we found some new cool ideas for the future. Read More

Hawk Host Report - June 2011

Posted on Tue Jun 7, 2011 by brian

Despite some recent blog posts, we did do a lot more in the month of May besides looking for Easter eggs in the software we use. Now don’t get me wrong, we do love to have some fun and, you guessed it, our idea of a good time is looking for those Easter eggs and other hidden gems. But through all that fun we managed to accomplish quite a bit internally, along with some nice customer facing changes. Read More

List of hidden HipChat smilies

Posted on Sat Jun 4, 2011 by cody

We recently started using HipChat internally to help improve communication within the company and to essentially have an intranet type of chat. After playing around with CampFire and toying around with our own XMPP server one of our colleagues mentioned hearing about a startup named HipChat. After a trial week period we were hooked, and highly recommend the application if you need a group chat / collaborative tool within your company. Read More
